US VP says President Trump wants to end Washington s funding of Russia-Ukraine war

WASHINGTON, Aug 11: US Vice President JD Vance has said that President Donald Trump wants the United States to end funding the Russia-Ukraine war, stating that Washington has grown ‘tired’ of spending such exorbitant amounts at behest of the average American taxpayer, as the US economy itself is facing problems.
“The president and I certainly think that America, we are done funding the Ukraine war business. We want to bring about a peaceful settlement to this thing. We want to stop the killing. But Americans, I think, are sick of continuing to send their money, their tax dollars, to this particular conflict,” Vance told Fox News yesterday.
The interview comes in the aftermath of Vance’s meeting with European and Ukrainian leaders, during his visit to London and meeting with the UK’s Foreign Minister David Lammy.
His trip to the UK was intended to set the stage for the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladmir Putin, and President Trump in Alaska coming Friday, where resolving the conflict between Kyiv and Moscow is expected to top the agenda.
Speaking on Europe’s intentions of continuing to finance the war should the US pull out, he said that Washington has no objections to it, but won’t be joining in.
“If the Europeans want to step up and buy the weapons from American producers, we’re okay with that. But we’re not going to fund it ourselves anymore,” he said, reports RT.
Trump is convinced that his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 is “worth the effort,” Vance said.
“Maybe this works out, maybe it doesn’t, but it’s worth the effort; it’s worth trying,” he quoted Trump as telling him privately on the morning of the interview.
Trump had earlier greenlighted “some swapping of territories to the betterment of both” sides for ending the conflict, adding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky would need to find a way to approve such a deal under Ukrainian law.
Zelensky has refused to abide by any agreement which saw the secession of Ukrainian territories to Russia, earlier stating that Kyiv’s territorial sovereignty was ‘non-negotiable.’ (UNI)
