US, UN denounce Istanbul airport attack

WASHINGTON, June 29:  The US and UN have denounced the terror attack at Istanbul’s Attaturk airport which left 36 people dead and 145 injured.       ”Ataturk International Airport, like Brussels Airport which was attacked earlier this year, is a symbol of international connections and the ties that bind us together,” White House Press Secretary Josh  Earnest said in a statement yesterday.       ”Our deepest condolences go out to the families and loved ones of those killed, and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured.  We remain steadfast in our support for Turkey, our NATO Ally and partner, along with all of our friends and allies around the world, as we continue to confront the threat of terrorism,” he added.         Expressing his deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Turkey, UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon wished a speedy recovery to those injured.       “The Secretary-General hopes that the perpetrators of this crime will be identified and brought to justice,” a statement issued by Mr Ban’s spokesperson said.       The spokesperson added that the UN chief stands firmly by Turkey as it confronts the threat of terrorism and stresses the need to intensify regional and international efforts to combat terrorism and extremism.       The attack also drew condemnation and condolences from other parts of the UN system.
