NEW YORK, Feb 18: Several US Senators and members of Congress are expected to address conference of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) delegates, scheduled for next month.
Various health care-related issues will be discussed during the conference, a statement released by the AAPI said. The three-day conference will open on March 26 at Capitol Hill in Washington along with AAPI’s Legislative Day and governing body meet.
Health care continues to be at the centre of the US national debate, especially after the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
One out of every 10 medical personnel serving in the US is of Indian heritage. AAPI is the largest body of its kind in the United States.
“This is the time of the year when we as members of AAPI are called upon to participate in the democratic process in our organisation and get a glimpse into the future,” Ravi Jahagirdar president of AAPI was quoted as saying in the statement. “AAPI is once again in the forefront in bringing many burning health care issues facing the community at large and bringing this to the Capitol and to the US Congress,” Sudhir Sekhsaria chairman of the AAPI legislative affairs committee said. “In our continued goals to reach out to US Congress, our annual legislative conference will focus on burning issues like Medicare, immigration, affordable care and of course on growing bilateral relations,” Sampat Shivangi, co-chairman of AAPI Legislative Affairs Committee, said. The meeting will be attended by the governors of Virginia and Maryland.
Vivek Murthy, surgeon general of America of Indian origin, is also expected to attend the meet.
