US Congress team coming for India visit next week, to meet the Dalai Lama

NEW DELHI:   A bipartisan Congressional delegation is coming for a visit to India next week during which it will also meet the Dalai lama.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is leading the high-level delegation.

Besides India, the Congress Members will also visit Nepal, Germany and Belgium.

Sources said the delegation will go to Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh and remain there on May 9 and 10 during which the members will meet the Dalai Lama.

The focus will be ”on national security, the global economy, bilateral and multilateral relations, and human rights,” a statement from the office of Ms Pelosi issued by the US Embassy said here today.

“Our bipartisan delegation travels at a vital time in the US relationship with India, Nepal and our NATO partners,” she said.

“Our delegation looks forward to meetings on how we can strengthen our economic and security relationships, as well as addressing challenges ranging from regional Russian aggression to global human rights” the Democratic leader said. In addition to leader Pelosi, the Members of the delegation are: Jim Sensenbrenner of Foreign Affairs Committee and Judiciary Committee;  Eliot Engel , Ranking Member, Foreign Affairs Committee,  Energy and Commerce Committee;Jim McGovern , Co-Chair, Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, Agriculture Committee, Rules Committee; Betty McCollum , Appropriations Committee; Judy Chu , Ways and Means Committee, Small Business Committee;  Joyce Beatty , Financial Services Committee Pramila Jayapal , Vice Ranking Member, Budget Committee and Judiciary Committee.
