WASHINGTON, July 2 : US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee suggested on Tuesday that it might be worth using B-2 bombers against Yemen’s Houthis that had been previously used to target Iran’s nuclear facilities, against the background of a new rocket attack on Israel by the movement.
Earlier in the day, the Israeli military said it had intercepted another missile launched from Yemen.
“We thought we were done with missiles coming to Israel, but Houthis just lit one up over us in Israel. Fortunately, Israel’s incredible interception system means we go to the shelter and wait until all clear. Maybe those B2 bombers need to visit Yemen!” Huckabee said on X.
The Houthis, who control northern Yemen and much of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, declared support for Palestine in late 2023 and have launched hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel since the start of the conflict in the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The Israeli military has carried out several air raids hitting numerous targets in Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen.
On June 22, the US struck three Iranian nuclear sites – Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan – prompting Tehran to launch a missile strike on the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on Monday. Trump said late on Monday that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire that would, after 24 hours, be an official end to the “12-day war.” On Tuesday, Trump said that the ceasefire between Iran and Israel was now in effect, urging the sides not to violate it.
Israel launched a large-scale operation against Iran in the early hours of June 13, accusing Tehran of implementing a secret military nuclear program. Tehran retaliated by launching Operation True Promise 3 that same day, hitting military targets in Israel. Iran denies the military dimension of its nuclear program.
