SRINAGAR, Nov 1: Director SKIMS, Soura, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, today led the first “Research Dissemination Meet”, highlighting the findings of the ICMR PCOS Task Force Study – the largest study on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) conducted in India.
Prof. Ganie, who serves as the National Chief Coordinator and Principal Investigator of the ICMR PCOS Task Force, shared key outcomes of the study during a media interaction.
He emphasized the urgent need to raise public awareness about PCOS, noting its high prevalence in the northern region, including J&K.

“An estimated 44 million women in India are affected by PCOS, which, if left untreated, can lead to serious long-term medical complications and psychological impacts on women,” Prof. Ganie said.
The national-level study, conducted at a cost of Rs 37 crore, examines multiple dimensions of PCOS and is expected to contribute vital evidence to global research efforts.
Prof. Ganie said the findings will be shared with major policy institutions and health authorities to help frame reformative strategies and standardized clinical pathways for PCOS management.
He underlined the importance of lifestyle modification, including minimizing junk food consumption, increasing physical activity, and managing stress.
He also clarified that not every ovarian cyst in young girls should be labeled as PCOS, stressing the need for accurate diagnosis and specialist-led treatment.
Prof. Ganie further highlighted the establishment of a dedicated PCOS Station at SKIMS – a first-of-its-kind initiative – and said similar units are being set up across tertiary care hospitals in India.
The model, he said, promotes collaboration among endocrinologists, gynecologists, radiologists, and allied specialists to ensure comprehensive and coordinated PCOS care.
He said the research dissemination meetings would be held every month, with each department presenting the research work they are undertaking.
“My department is the first to do so, and similar exercises will be carried out by other departments to bring their work to light and make it accessible to the public,” he said.
