Unrest in NIT

The ugly incident in NIT Srinagar is regrettable. Students unrest in various educational institutions is not an unknown feature. However, these situations need to be handled with utmost care and caution. The police have to be trained in handling the crowds of students whenever they come out in large numbers to protest against something which according to them goes wrong. The Ministry of Human Resource Development has deputed a high level official team to take stock of the situation on the ground and it has met with the outsiders as well as the insiders. It has also heard the demand of the students and naturally, the Ministry will reflect on these demands at its proper level. In response to a call from the Home Minister, the Chief Minister J&K has assured him that full protection will be given to all the students. Responsible leaders of all hues have appealed the students to exercise restraint and not do anything that would escalate tension or lead to disruption in their studies. The State Government has ordered an inquiry and once the report of the committee comes in, adequate action should be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents. Such incidents leave a very bad impression of the State. Concerned authorities should enter into frequent exchange of ideas with the students, understand their difficulties and think over their demands. The Police authorities will be making a big mistake by jumping to the conclusion that all stirs that occur on the campuses are to be suppressed by muscle power. That policy will be counterproductive. The students have to understand that India is a mosaic and tolerance alone can help in maintaining and upholding peaceful coexistence among all stakeholders.
