Universities can’t be turned into laboratories of hate: Gaurav

JAMMU, Jan 6: BJP spokesperson and convener of International Affairs, Jammu & Kashmir UT, Gaurav Gupta has strongly condemned the raising of objectionable, provocative and inflammatory slogans against the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on January 5.
Gaurav Gupta stated that the incident, which followed the Supreme Court’s denial of bail to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case, reflects a deeply disturbing attempt to undermine Constitutional institutions and challenge the authority of the judiciary. He emphasized that democratic dissent cannot be misused as a shield for provocation, contempt of court or ideological extremism.
“The Supreme Court is the highest Constitutional authority of the country. Expressing anger, raising provocative slogans or attempting to delegitimise judicial verdicts after an unfavourable decision amounts to willful disrespect of the Constitution,” Gupta asserted.
Welcoming the firm and responsible stand taken by the JNU administration, Gupta said universities are meant to be centres of education, innovation and constructive debate, and cannot be permitted to degenerate into hubs of hatred, anarchy and political radicalization. He demanded strict disciplinary and legal action against all those identified, so that such incidents are not repeated anywhere in the country.
The BJP leader also criticised opposition parties for politicising the issue and attempting to shield disruptive elements instead of unequivocally condemning acts that tarnish the image of premier academic institutions. “Those who selectively speak of democracy but refuse to respect the verdicts of the Supreme Court expose their hypocrisy and double standards,” he remarked.
Gupta reiterated that the BJP firmly believes in freedom of speech and expression, but will not tolerate anti-national activities, glorification of individuals accused in serious criminal cases, or slogans that threaten public order, national unity and social harmony.
“The youth of India deserve education, empowerment and opportunity-not indoctrination, chaos and contempt for Constitutional values. Respect for the Constitution, judiciary and democratic institutions is non-negotiable,” he concluded.
