SRINAGAR: With just four days left for the commencement of annual 59-day-long Amarnath yatra, Union Home Secretary LC Goyal arrived here today to review the security arrangements for the peaceful conduct of pilgrimage in south Kashmir Himalayas.
General situation, including recent incidents of hoisting of ISIS and Pakistani flags in the valley during the rallies of separatist leaders and demonstrations came into focus during the review meeting held here today.
Mr Goyal, on his two-day visit, was given a detailed brief about the measures taken for the yatra starting from both traditional Pahalgam and shortest Baltal tracks from July 2. Official sources said he was informed about the deployment of security forces on yatra route, besides on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
They said immediately after arriving here, Mr Goyal chaired a review meeting with senior security force officers from Army, paramilitary, police and civil administration. He was informed about other measures taken by the authorities for the pilgrims. Mr Goyal was informed about the functioning of counter infiltration grid and recent successful operations against militants in which 29 militants were killed on the Line of Control (LoC) and within the valley.
A large numbe of trained militants were waiting across the border to sneak into this side before the onset of winter. However, security forces were already on high alert to foil any infiltration attempt by militants from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), he was told. (AGENCIES)
