Uniform civil code

Sir,
Article 44 of Indian constitution  lays down that “the stateshall endeavor to secure for its citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India”. It’s high time our country adopts a uniform civil code. The  Judges of Supreme Court have many times reminded the Government of it’s duly to enact such a code. In a country where the principle of equality for all the citizens is enshrined in the constitution, different set of personal laws for different religious communities goes against this principle. This also goes against the secular character of our country. Various personal laws related to property, marriage, divorce and inheritance discriminate against women. A common law will end this discrimination. The only opposition to uniform civil laws is from conservative elements with vested interests. It is unfortunate that the issue is hijacked by politicians and is communalised.
Yours etc…
