Unattended garbage causing inconvenience to residents

Srinagar, Aug 23: The continuous dumping of garbage in Panjipora hamlet of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district is causing discomfort to the locals, as the foul stench emanating from the garbage piles have covered the area.
Residents said that all residential rubbish is deposited in an empty patch of land in the village, putting the ecosystem at risk and spreading disease. Residents believe the government should adopt a scientific technique to recycle domestic garbage to reduce the risk of illness.
“The trash attracts stray dogs and birds, who can be seen looking for food in the trash and endangering passers-by”, Ghulam Mohammad, a local said, adding that the stray cows that may be seen roaming around these regions ingest plastic and other harmful materials, inflicting serious injury to their intestines and stomachs.
According to residents, municipal officials have failed to remove the waste for several months, causing serious problems for the entire population of these regions. The area has been turned into a virtual garbage dump, with debris piles creating health hazards. “No one has come to lift the debris and the horrible smell emanating from the garbage is causing significant problems for individuals, particularly the elderly who are having difficulty breathing,” another local said.
The locals added that the rubbish mounds are having a negative impact on the health of the residents in the region. “My mother has a sore throat, and a prolonged infection can have catastrophic effects. I’m hoping that someone visits these sites soon, or else the deadland will expand,” a local said.
