UN to have memorial wall dedicated to fallen peacekeepers

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 16:  At India’s initiative, a memorial wall dedicated to fallen peacekeepers will be built at the UN headquarters here as a lasting tribute to the sacrifice made by them in the line of duty.
India’s Ambassador to the UN Asoke Mukerji had proposed at the inaugural session of the Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations (C-34) last month that a UN Peacekeepers Memorial Wall be constructed with the names of all the UN peacekeepers since 1948 who have laid down their lives “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war”.
The proposal was recommended on March 13 by the C-34 to the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly that deals with subjects related to decolonisation and peacekeeping.
The report of the Special Committee was also adopted as a whole. Mukerji’s proposal for the memorial was endorsed by the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) group and then agreed upon by all other delegations of the C-34, according to the Indian mission here.
According to the text of report, “the Special Committee recommends the establishment, through voluntary contributions, of a Memorial Wall at the Peacekeepers Memorial at United Nations Headquarters and requests that due consideration be given to the modalities involved, including the recording of the names of those who have made the supreme sacrifice”.
The recommendation when implemented would be a lasting tribute to all the fallen peacekeepers. India’s proposal for the memorial is befitting since it has contributed more than 180,000 peacekeepers in 44 UN peacekeeping missions so far.
India has lost 158 of its soldiers in these missions, the highest by any country, serving in the line of duty of protecting the highest ideals of the UN and exemplifying India’s commitment to international peace, the Indian mission said.
India had also made a proposal in the C-34 last year to commemorate the International Day of UN Peacekeepers on May 29 every year. (PTI)
