Ukraine will not meet EU accession criteria for at least 20 years

MOSCOW, Dec 28 : Ukraine will not meet the criteria for EU accession for at least the next 20 years, and the EU could accept it for political reasons, which would harm the union itself, Steffen Kotre, a Bundestag member of parliament from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, believes.

“Ukraine will most likely not meet the criteria for EU accession for at least the next 20 years,” Kotre told the Russian newspaper Izvestia.

However, according to the lawmaker, the European union has long ceased to be a community of economic and social cooperation and has become an instrument of “unilateral political orientation of European states.”

“If the EU continues its course of confrontation with Russia and, consequently, turning Ukraine into a tool [in the fight against Russia], it is entirely possible that Ukraine, despite its unfulfilled demands, will be admitted to the EU, to the detriment of all member states. But this, in turn, will only accelerate the process of the disintegration of the European Union,” Kotre added.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday that he had secured US support for setting a clear timeline for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, which still requires EU’s consent to happen.

On December 8, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that the EU’s intention to grant Ukraine membership of the bloc by 2030 would mean the start of a war with Russia, for which Europe had already begun preparing.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in early December that Russia did not intend to fight Europe, but if Europe started it, then Russia would be ready.
