JAMMU, Apr 30: Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retired) participated in a road safety seminar organized today at Raj Bhavan.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor stated that road safety is not limited to traffic rules alone, but is deeply connected with public awareness, collective responsibility, and responsible behavior by citizens. He appealed to all departments, educational institutions, media and social organizations to turn road safety into a mass movement.
The Governor, while addressing school children in particular, encouraged them to become brand ambassadors of road safety, to spread awareness within their families and communities, and to set an example by following the rules themselves.
He emphasized that in a hilly state like Uttarakhand, road safety challenges are even more complex. “The geographical terrain, narrow roads, steep slopes, and changing weather conditions all increase the risk of road accidents. In such conditions, alertness, restraint, and adherence to rules while driving are essential for saving lives,” he emphasized.
During the seminar, Dr Devendra Singh, Director of the Central Road Transport Institute, and Technical Officer Prashant Khadge shared key insights on road safety with the audience. They emphasized that road safety should not just be about regulations, but should become a part of every individual’s lifestyle.
On the occasion, the event convener Padma Shri Dr B K S Sanjay shed light on the objectives and background of the seminar. He stated that the simplest way to reduce accidents is for everyone to learn and follow traffic rules. He requested the Governor to include road safety education in the school curriculum.
Orthopedic surgeon, Dr Gaurav Sanjay gave an audio-visual presentation highlighting the personal, familial, social, and economic impacts of road accidents. He urged the youth to always wear helmets while riding two-wheelers and use seat belts while driving four-wheelers.
The seminar was attended by Padma Shri Premchand Sharma, ADG V Murugesan, Dr Sudha Rani Pandey, Dr Gaurav Sanjay, other distinguished guests, and a large number of school students.
