JAMMU, Jan28 : Senior Congress leader and District Development Council (DDC) member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony welcomed the University Grants Commission’s Promotion of Equity in Higher Education Institutions Regulations, 2026 (UGC 2026) and termed it a significant step toward ensuring fairness and inclusion in the country’s higher education system.
Reacting to the nationwide debate surrounding the new norms, Tony said the regulations are aimed at preventing discrimination and atrocities against deprived and marginalized communities.
“We fully support efforts to promote fairness and inclusion in higher education institutions. These regulations are an important step to safeguard vulnerable sections of society,” he stated.
At the same time, Tony sought to reassure students and faculty members from other communities, including upper castes, saying there was no cause for concern.
“If you are acting rightly, there is nothing to fear. The law is designed to be fair in both directions, protecting the deprived while ensuring justice for all,” he said.
Tony noted that the success of UGC 2026 would depend on transparency, accountability and clearly defined safeguards.
He welcomed the formation of equity committees, grievance redressal cells and reporting mechanisms, but stressed that these bodies must function with consistency and impartiality.
“Clear timelines, protection against malicious complaints and proper orientation and training of staff are essential to ensure the regulations serve their intended purpose,” he added.
While the Union Education Ministry has maintained that the regulations are constitutionally sound, Tony emphasized the need for continuous monitoring and legal clarity.
“UGC 2026 has the potential to become a landmark reform, but its success will depend on fairness, transparency, and vigilant implementation,” he concluded.
