JAMMU, July 8: Two daily wagers of the Power Development Department (PDD) were hospitalized today after their health deteriorated during a hunger strike demanding regularization and increased honorarium.
The workers, identified as Vishal Gupta and Vijay Gandhi, have been admitted to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu for treatment. The hunger strike began yesterday following 12 consecutive days of protest, during which the workers received no concrete assurance from the authorities.
The agitation is being led by Akhil Sharma under the banner of the All J&K PDD, PDL, TDL and Other Workers Union. The protest commenced on June 26 outside the office of J&K Power Development Corporation Limited at Bahu Plaza, Jammu.
The protesting employees, who have assembled from various districts across Jammu province, are primarily demanding immediate financial concurrence for the regularization of 557 daily-rated workers.
Despite the prolonged protest and escalating health concerns, there has been no positive response from the government, forcing the daily wagers to resort to a hunger strike.
