Officials said the incident occurred around 5:15 PM when the Pakistani nationals – Ahsan Anwar of Nankana Sahib, Punjab, Pakistan, and Mohammad Sanaullah of Basti Jawewala, Tehsil Dinpur, District Muzaffarabad, Punjab, Pakistan – along with a local inmate, Karanjit Singh alias Gugga of Dablehar, RS Pura, allegedly opened fire at the on-duty police personnel with a country-made pistol (desi katta), leaving them injured.

A video of the incident has also gone viral on social media, purportedly showing the attackers targeting the policemen from point-blank range with the weapon.
After injuring the policemen, the trio fled from the observation home, officials said.
The injured policemen have been identified as Head Constable Praveen Kumar and SPO Vinay Kumar, both posted at the observation home.
Officials said they were initially taken to a healthcare facility in RS Pura and later shifted to Government Medical College Jammu for advanced treatment, where their condition was stated to be stable at the time of filing of this report.
“While Praveen Kumar has sustained a head injury, Vinay Kumar has suffered an injury near his ear. It is not immediately known whether they have suffered bullet injuries,” a police officer said.
According to police, one of the absconding Pakistani nationals, Ahsan Anwar was detained in 2019 after crossing over to this side of the border, while Mohammad Sanaullah was detained in 2021 under similar circumstances.
“Both were lodged in the juvenile observation home following their detention,” police said, adding that the third inmate, Karanjit Singh, was lodged in the facility in 2025 after his arrest along with other members of a notorious crime network, Khauff gang, in connection with the murder of rival gang leader Sumit Jandiyal alias Gataru, 37, in the Jewel Chowk area in January 2025.
Taking cognisance of the current incident, police have registered a case FIR number 39/2026 at Police Station RS Pura under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 132 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 262 (Intentionally resisting, obstructing, or escaping from lawful custody for an offense), 307 (Theft after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint), 111 (organised crime) of the BNS and 3/25 Arms Act (unauthorized possession, carriage, or use of firearms) and started further investigation into the matter.
Specialised teams of the police officers have also been constituted to trace and apprehend the absconding inmates.
Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu, Joginder Singh, said that as per procedure, an inquiry will be also conducted, and action, including suspension(s), will follow if any negligence or involvement of police personnel is found in facilitating the procurement of the weapon inside the observation home.
