JAMMU, Jan 29: Jammu and Kashmir Police today claimed to have busted an impersonation and cheating racket in the Domana area by arresting 2 persons who were posing as officials of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) to dupe people on the pretext of facilitating house construction-related work.
According to police, the accused allegedly collected money through online transactions and cash by falsely claiming that they could prepare and process municipal documents.
The arrested persons have been identified as Mohammad Shabiq and Mohammad Zaffar, both residents of Upper Thather, Bantalab, Jammu.
Police said the duo misrepresented themselves as JMC officials and approached residents with false assurances of completing official formalities.
Acting on a complaint received at Police Station Domana, they said, verification was conducted with JMC, which confirmed that the accused had no association with the corporation.
Following this, an FIR No. 23/2026 under sections 318(4) and 319(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at Police Station Domana, police said.
Accordingly, a team led by SHO Domana Inspector Varuneshwar Singh was constituted, which tracked down and arrested the accused within 48 hours of the FIR registration, they said.
During investigation, police recovered cash allegedly taken from the complainants from the possession of the accused.
Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain whether more people are involved in the racket and to identify additional victims.
“More arrests and recoveries are likely,” police said.
Meanwhile, police have advised citizens to remain cautious and to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be a Government official before making any payment or sharing personal or financial details.
