JAMMU, July 5: In a remarkable testament to modern medicine and compassionate healthcare, two 88-year-old women have regained their mobility following successful bilateral Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgeries at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Katra.
The surgeries, conducted in the recent past by renowned Joint Replacement Surgeon Dr Vikas Padha, were performed on Asha Jalali from Trikuta Nagar (Jammu) and Haneefa Begum from the remote Marmat area of Doda. Both women had been suffering from advanced osteoarthritis with severe knee deformities, which had significantly limited their ability to walk.
What makes this case extraordinary is the striking similarity in both instances—same age, same condition, same surgical approach and the same team—all culminating in a successful outcome. Now, five months post-surgery, both women walk independently without pain or assistance, underlining the possibilities of quality care, regardless of age.
“Age is often questioned in joint replacement decisions,” said Dr Vikas Padha. “These two courageous women prove that with proper medical evaluation and expert care, age should not be a barrier to regaining independence.”
Dr Padha credited the seamless collaboration of the Anaesthesia, Physiotherapy and Nursing teams for the outstanding post-operative recovery.
Dr Yashpal Sharma, Executive Director, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) acknowledged the pivotal role of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board. He said, “This success reflects our mission of delivering ethical and advanced healthcare. It shows how investments in infrastructure and medical excellence can transform lives.”
Facility Director Dr M M Mathavan emphasized the Hospital’s growing reputation as a leading joint replacement center in North India. He also urged the public to utilize the hospital’s services, which are available cashless under Ayushman Bharat Golden Card, ECHS, CGHS and other insurance schemes.
