ISTANBUL, July 29: Turkey is ready to host a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday.
“We believe that this war must end already. At every opportunity, I emphasize our readiness to host a meeting at the level of leaders in our territory. The sincere wish of Turkey is that, just as the negotiating table was previously organized in Istanbul, a table for discussing peace will be arranged in Turkey in the near future, and this bloody war will come to an end,” Erdogan said after a cabinet meeting.
On July 24, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said that Erdogan sought to speed up the organization of a possible meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy in Istanbul. Later in the day, when asked about the idea of the leaders’ meeting before the end of August, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that it would be hard to overcome this “distance” in one leap, given the amount of work required to be done.
On July 25, Erdogan said he was planning to discuss with US President Donald Trump and Putin their possible meeting in Istanbul.
