SRINAGAR, Mar 9: Asia’s largest tulip garden overlooking Dal Lake is set to open for visitors this month with around 1.7 million tulips of over 70 varieties in bloom, marking the beginning of Kashmir’s tourist season and drawing thousands of travellers to the Valley.
Preparations are in full swing, with nearly 120 workers, including gardeners and spraying teams, giving final touches to the Tulip Garden, which spans 55 hectares.
A Floriculture Department official said the garden has been meticulously maintained, with pruned trees and manicured lawns creating a serene atmosphere. In addition to tulips, visitors can enjoy other spring flowers like hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens, adding to the garden’s vibrant display.
Officials said the opening date depends on weather conditions. “If the weather remains dry, the garden is expected to open by March 16-17, but if it rains, the inauguration may be delayed until after March 20,” he said. Click here to watch video
Established in 2007 by then-Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, the tulip garden was created to extend Kashmir’s tourism season beyond summers and winters. Over the years, it has grown into a major attraction, drawing visitors from across India and abroad. Last year, the garden recorded 4.65 lakh visitors, an increase from 3.65 lakh in 2023.
Officials are optimistic about surpassing last year’s footfall, with expectations of an even larger influx of visitors. “We have worked tirelessly to maintain the garden, and we invite tourists from all over the world to witness this breathtaking floral spectacle,” said an official.
