WASHINGTON, July 25 : US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that he would like to see the New START treaty between the United States and Russia to remain in effect, warning that its expiration would create a significant problem for the world.
“That’s not an agreement you want to expire,” Trump told reporters, commenting on the expiration of the New START treaty. “When you take off nuclear restrictions, that’s a big problem [for the world].”
Signed in 2010 and extended until February 5, 2026, New START serves as a cornerstone of strategic stability between Russia and the US. It primarily focuses on limiting the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads and delivery systems.
In February 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the suspension of Russia’s participation in New START, stating that Russia would not allow the US and NATO to inspect its nuclear facilities as Washington was not abiding by the terms of the treaty and was trying to undermine Russia’s national security.
Three months later, the US followed suit. Both sides, however, say they continue to abide by New START’s numerical limits.
