JAMMU, June 14: The adhoc committee of All J&K Guru Ravi Dass Sabha Jammu organized a tribute ceremony on the occasion of the birth anniversary of veteran social reformer and former MLA Advocate Babu Milkhi Ram at Gurudwara Guru Ravi Dass, Krishna Nagar, Jammu.
The gathering paid rich tributes to several prominent dalit leaders, including late Babu Milkhi Ram (MLA), late Bhagat Chhajju Ram (ex-minister), late Mansukh Raj (MLA) and late Mahasha Nar Singh (MLA), recognizing their lifelong commitment to the upliftment of marginalized communities.
R C Bhasin, convener of the Sabha, presented a historical overview of the contributions made by the late leaders. He highlighted their relentless struggle for social justice, equality, and the empowerment of the oppressed sections of society.
Speaking on the occasion, Sham Lal Basson, president of All J&K Dalit Chetna Manch, emphasized Babu Milkhi Ram’s role in championing the causes of the depressed classes, particularly in securing reservations in services and promotions, and advocating for land rights for the landless poor.
Sunita Bangotra, president of Savitri Bai Phule Mahila Sangathan, reflected on Babu Milkhi Ram’s life and mission, citing examples of his dedication and courage. Retired Director Shoba Ram shared insights into the contributions of late Mansukh Raj, while P L Angral also offered a historical perspective on Babu Milkhi Ram’s legacy.
A special ceremony was also held to honor more than 50 meritorious students who secured 80% and above marks in their academics. They were awarded medals and portraits of Dr B R Ambedkar.
Among those who paid floral tributes to dalit icons were T C Bavoria, Joginder Paul, Tarsem Kumar, Sham Lal Kalsi, Surjeet Singh Heer, Gourav Ravidasia, Sham Lal, Darshan Lal, Krishan Lal, B R Chadgal and Sham Lal Langeh.
