SAMBA, May 11: A tribute ceremony was held today in Rakh Amb Tali to commemorate the 17th death anniversary of Hoshiyar Singh and his wife Shashi Bala, who lost their lives in a brutal terror attack on this day in 2008.
The ceremony took place at the couple’s residence and was attended by family members, local residents, and well-wishers. The gathering paid heartfelt homage to the duo, who were widely respected for their contributions to society.
On May 11, 2008, terrorists who had infiltrated from across the border stormed into the couple’s house and opened fire, killing both on the spot. Hoshiyar Singh was a dedicated social worker, while Shashi Bala, an employee in the health department, was also actively engaged in community service.
The attack triggered a prolonged gun battle between the terrorists and security forces, lasting over 20 hours. All three terrorists were eventually killed. However, the encounter also claimed the lives of three security personnel, Daily Excelsior photojournalist Ashok Sodhi, and three civilians.
The incident plunged the Samba region into mourning and left an indelible mark on the collective memory of the community. Since then, every year, residents gather to honour the couple’s sacrifice and legacy.
Speakers at today’s ceremony recalled the selfless work of Hoshiyar Singh and Shashi Bala and reiterated the need to stand united against the threat of terrorism. Their memory, they said, continues to inspire future generations in the region.
