SRINAGAR : Train services between Baramulla in north Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region resumed today after remaining suspended for four days due to security reasons, a railway official said.
He said train services between Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla in north Kashmir have been resumed. Similarly, the train services between Badgam-Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir to Banihal in Jammu region were running as per schedule.
The services on all routes were suspended due to security reasons on April 9, when bypoll for Srinagar parliamentary constituency was held. But, the bypoll to Srinagar Lok Sabha seat, which recorded only 7.14 per cent polling, was marred by violence that left eight youth dead and over 150 others, including 100 security force personnel injured.
The railway services remained suspended on April 10 and April 11 when separatists had called for a strike against the killing of civilians. However, some trains operated from 1600 hrs on Srinagar-Anantnag-Qazigund in south Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region on April 12 to clear the passengers, mostly outside workers stranded at Banihal due to cancellation of train service on April 10 and 11 to Srinagar.
But, the train services remained suspended on Srinagar-Badgam and Baramulla track on April 12. The services were again suspended yesterday due to security reasons.
The train services remained suspended for about six months in summer last year due to unrest in the valley, where about 100 people, mostly youths, died and thousands were injured in violence. (AGENCIES)
