SRINAGAR, May 15: The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Shailendra Kumar today said that the Divisional Administration has allowed one way regulated movement of light motor vehicles only on the Sonamarg-Leh highway under strict observation as there is still huge accumulation of snow on the sides of the road. Mr. Kumar said that the BRO/Army has been conducting regular trial recce of the road to ascertain its traffic worthiness, however, due to continuous inclement weather, they have conveyed that the road is not yet fully safe for traffic due to constant danger of slides and avalanches. The Divisional Commissioner said although the road has been opened but snow slides are occurring at certain stretches of the road which are being cleared by the BRO. Mr. Kumar said that Divisional Administration is according utmost priority to the safety of life of the passengers and only after receiving positive indications/ clearance regarding traffic worthiness of the road from the concerned is traffic allowed to ply. He further said that once the situation with regards to weather becomes favourable and road condition improves heavy vehicles will also be allowed to ply along with LMVs, adding that people should cooperate with the Divisional Administration in this regard. Subject to fair weather, the Divisional Commissioner said that as of now only LMVs are allowed from Sonamarg to Drass and Drass to Sonamarg on alternate days besides the movement is restricted from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m through check posts at Drass and Sonamarg. He said traffic will ply towards Drass from Sonamarg on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and towards Sonamarg from Drass on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
