JAMMU, June 13: Massive traffic jam on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Chenani, Ramban and Banihal sectors created chaos throughout the day today.
Official sources said that due to rain, shooting stones /land slides at Battery Chashma, Panthyal and Marog area, between Ramban and Banihal last night, the highway was closed. It was, however, restored at around 7 am. The vehicles from Srinagar and Jammu side were allowed to move towards their respective destinations by the Traffic Police authorities.
Due to single road at several sliding zones in Ramsu and Ramban areas, the movement of smooth traffic was disrupted and massive traffic jam was created in Chenani, Nashri, Peerah, Chanderkote, Ramban, Ramsu and Banihal belt. The locals at Ramban said the traffic jam started in the area from 8 am onwards and it continued throughout the day. The vehicles kept on moving at snail’s pace and many passenger vehicles remained stranded for hours together.
Reports said in the absence of adequate number of Traffic Police personnel and Policemen on the highway, the commuters had to suffer badly. Many people remained trapped without water and food for hours together on the highway. Even in the evening very slow movement of vehicles was witnessed at Ramban Main Bazaar. The people alleged that traffic jams have become the order of the day on the highway and there seems to be no respite to the people even during coming Shri Amarnath ji Yatra.
