JAMMU, June 20: Poor planning of Traffic Police Department to effectively manage traffic turned out to be a real headache for every commuter in Jammu.
Today’s jam, the longest and the worst, got on the nerves of the people, with almost everyone assailing men in blue for their unfortunate road show.
In other works, Jammu city could virtually be termed as a place of traffic jams, with the long queues of vehicles extending from Satwari Chowk to Jewel, from BC Road to Janipura, on the Jammu University road and on the interior roads.
Apart from this, men in blue failed to regulate the traffic smoothly on both the tubes of Tawi bridge, which resulted in vehicular congestion in the city as well on the outskirts.
Some commuters waited for hours for the roads to clear, others, who had a choice, parked their vehicles by the roadsides, in the lanes and bylanes and left for their destinations on foot. The roads were so crammed that there was no space left even for the two-wheelers and the pedestrians.
The daily commuting on the roads of Jammu has become longer and more gruelling day by day, depicting the failure of Traffic Police Department to ensure smooth function of the vehicular movement on outer and inner roads. The worsening traffic congestion on Jammu roads presents a depressing profile of the City of Temples.
Almost all the rotaries in Jammu were choked, the vehicles were stranded and stuck up in jams and several people were seen walking on foot to reach their destinations. Some commuters were stranded in their vehicles for at-least three hours due to mismanagement of traffic authorities. They opted for routes via Jammu University, Panama Chowk to Gujjar Nagar bridge but found it hard to overcome the traffic jam as delays in easing the jam had created traffic bottlenecks elsewhere in the city.
However, the traffic cops were seen relaxing on the roadsides putting the people in a quandary. There was limited presence of the men in blue at Bikram Chowk, Dogra Chowk, Jewel Chowk, KC Chowk, Rehari Chowk, Canal Road, Akhnoor Road, Talab Tillo Road and various interior roads to guide the commuters.
The people were trying to opt for routes on their own to reach their destinations which added to the commotion on Jammu roads.
The tourists and pilgrims from other States also failed to reach Bus Stand and Railway Station to carry on their further journey due to traffic jam.
The people coming from other tehsils of Jammu districts especially RS Pura, Bishnah, Arnia and Akhnoor and other States and districts had to face a tough time as their vehicles were not allowed to move ahead towards Jammu city.
“As more people move to the city for their day to day affairs, the road are overused and vehicles using it are unable to move freely and in the peak hours of morning and evening the situation get worse”, said Vishal Sharma, a resident of Talab Tillo.
He said that although steps like installing traffic lights were taken yet as the lights remain non-functional most of the times, adding that the impact to the roads is pretty nasty.
Munish Aggarwal, a private company employee said that “No doubt, traffic congestion is resulting into unnecessary delays, reduction in speed and has resulted into a non-productive activity for most people as when they get stuck in traffic jams, they reach their workplace late or reach back home late.
