Traders threaten agitation over LPG issue

SRINAGAR, Sept 29: Kashmir Economic Alliance (KEA) today threatened to launch an agitation in case the State Government does not streamline the distribution of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The KEA also took a dig at the State Government over its alleged failure in fixing the price of LPG cylinders across the State.
Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, Mohammad Yaseen Khan, Chairman KEA said that more than two weeks have passed since the Central Government came out with modalities for both subsidized and non-subsidized LPG cylinders. He said the State Government is in a slumber and is yet to take a decision about the procedure to be followed in supply of gas cylinders.
“People are confused these days since they don’t know about the price to be paid for an LPG cylinder. The rate for the LPG cylinder varies a lot and dealers charge according to their own will. Some charge Rs. 412, some Rs. 753 while as there are others who charge Rs. 837. This confusion needs to be removed so that people heave a sigh of relief,” said Yaseen.
Yaseen said that the State Government should take a cue from the other States that have decided to provide nine subsidized LPG cylinders to the consumers instead of six as directed by the Central Government.
“Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister, Qamar Ali Akhoon has assured that the matter would be sorted out within the next three days. If they do it well and good and in case they fail then we would come out on streets and lodge strong protests against the Government. We cannot hold back and see that people suffer due to the wrong policies of the State Government,” said Yaseen.
Speaking on this occasion, Siraj Ahmad, secretary general KEA said that there should be equitable development of all regions of the State. He said Kashmir division should be given preference since the people of the region have suffered and deserve all the support as well as encouragement from the policy makers.
