JAMMU, Dec 11: Tension gripped Kanak Mandi area of Jammu when a team of Department of Commercial Taxes (DCT) reached the market and tried to raid one of the establishments of a trader.
However, strong protest by the traders forced the team to suspend the operation and go back.
According to the sources, a team of Department of Commercial Taxes along with a team of police, this afternoon reached Kanak Mandi area to conduct surprise checking of the commercial establishments of the traders, but all the traders united and strongly objected their move. The whole market was shut down in protest against the said move of the team of Commercial Taxes and the traders as well as locals raised slogans against the department.
Meanwhile, all office bearers of Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCI), Jammu including president, Rakesh Gupta, reached the spot. They termed the raid total illegal and warned that a clash would erupt if the Commercial Taxes team does not go back.
The sources said that the CCI president also spoke to Finance Minister, Dr Haseeb Drabu, who reportedly passed some directions to the team of Commercial Taxes, after which the team suspended the raid and went back. Thereafter, the whole market was opened again.
Later, a spokesman of The Commercial Taxes Department said that the raid was conducted as per law. “The Commercial Taxes Department is empowered to conduct such raids under section 66”, he said and added that the probing team had to return back after traders created law and order problem.
Meanwhile, Traders Federation Ware House, Nehru Market, has also criticized the action of the Department of Commercial Taxes. Condemning the action of team of Commercial Taxes, general secretary of Ware House Traders Federation, Deepak Gupta, warned the department against taking such anti-traders action. He also demanded intervention of Finance Minister in this regard.
