JAMMU, Sept 28: Expressing concern over plight of these daily wagers senior trade Union leaders including Mir Ghulam Rasool Butvini who is chairman of Pensioners and Senior Citizens Association and D N Sadhu its secretary said in the recent Cabinet meeting, the demand for their regularization was once again ignored. Despite thousands of vacant posts in Government departments, these workers are left to suffer without justice. This reflects an anti-working class policy of the Government, they added.
They said daily wagers in Jammu & Kashmir have been serving for the last 30 years on meagre wages of only ?9,500 per month. At the time of their engagement, many were unmarried and now they have families of four to five members to support. With children’s education, medical expenses, food, and clothing, survival on such low wages has become impossible.
They said the Government has enhanced the salaries, pensions, and benefits of MLAs. Within just five years of service, they secure lifelong pensions and countless facilities. But on the other hand, daily wagers – especially in the power sector – are losing their lives while working in hazardous conditions. They are given no relief, no insurance, no social security. This is nothing less than slow poisoning of the working class by the Government, they added.
They urged daily wagers to unite and choose the path of a protected struggle to achieve their genuine demands of regularization, fair wages, and security.
