ADDID ABABA, Nov 08: SPUTNIK ) The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has accused the Ethiopian Government of carrying out an armed attack in the Afar region, resulting in casualties, according to a statement cited by the Addis Standard newspaper.
The drone attack took place on the night of November 6, causing casualties among TPLF forces and local residents, the TPLF statement said, as reported on Friday.
The TPLF further claimed that federal forces and allied militias attempted to block a public road before launching heavy artillery fire, accusing them of violating the peace agreement.
In addition, the TPLF’s statement, released on Thursday, alleged that the Ethiopian Government had organized and armed mercenaries in the Afar region to destabilize the area.
The conflict in northern Ethiopia erupted in November 2020 after Tigray’s authorities accused the TPLF, which had dominated the country’s politics for nearly three decades, of attacking a military base. The Ethiopian government responded with a military operation in Tigray.
By June 2021, Tigray rebels had captured the region’s administrative center, Mekele, prompting the Ethiopian government to declare an unconditional ceasefire. However, the rebels later launched a new offensive, retook parts of Tigray, and advanced into the Amhara region.
Peace talks between the Ethiopian Government and Tigray rebels began in October 2022 in Pretoria, South Africa. In November 2022, both sides signed the Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, which aimed to end the conflict. (UNI)
