LEH, Dec 28: Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, today emphasized that tourism is a vital pillar of Ladakh’s economic growth, playing a significant role in livelihood generation for local communities while strengthening allied sectors such as hospitality, transport, handicrafts and eco-tourism. He underscored the need to promote sustainable and responsible tourism practices to safeguard Ladakh’s fragile ecosystem and ensure inclusive, long-term benefits for the region.
The LG was speaking during his visit to the iconic Sangam Point, located about 35 kilometres from Leh on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway. The site marks the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers and is globally renowned for the striking visual contrast created by the blue waters of the Indus merging with the muddy green-brown waters of the Zanskar.
Describing Sangam Point as a natural marvel and a flagship tourist attraction of Ladakh, Kavinder said such destinations greatly enhance Ladakh’s appeal among domestic and international tourists. He noted that the breathtaking landscape, surrounded by rugged mountains and river valleys, offers unforgettable visual experiences, making Ladakh a preferred destination for nature lovers, photographers and adventure enthusiasts.
The LG highlighted that Sangam Point has emerged as a major hub for adventure tourism, offering activities such as river rafting, trekking and sightseeing, while also serving as an important stopover for travellers on the Srinagar-Leh corridor. He stressed the need to develop dedicated viewpoints and cafeterias at the site to enhance visitor comfort, while maintaining cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
Kavinder said that the Zoji La Tunnel, expected to be completed in the next two years, will be a game changer by providing all-weather connectivity and boosting tourism, especially during winter months. Emphasizing winter tourism, the LG said efforts are underway to promote winter sports, cultural events and experiential tourism to attract visitors year-round.
During the visit, Kavinder interacted with officials, stakeholders and tourists, urging responsible tourism initiatives that empower local communities and preserve Ladakh’s pristine environment. He appealed to people across the country to explore Ladakh’s natural beauty.
