Tough sanctions prepared to force Russia to start peace talks: Austria

VIENNA, Aug 19: “Very tough sanctions” have been prepared to force Moscow to sit down at the negotiating table to resolve the Ukraine conflict, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger said.
“We will see what results today’s summit will lead to, but very tough sanctions have already been prepared to finally force [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to sit down at the negotiating table,” Meinl-Reisinger told Austrian broadcaster ORF2.
She added that the main task is to restore peace order in Europe.
“We need guarantees that our people in Austria are protected. We cannot allow someone to simply act in their own political interests, ignoring the security of others. If ensuring security means European pressure, we will take this into account,” Meinl-Reisinger added.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US hopes that an agreement on settling the Ukraine conflict can be reached at a trilateral meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
