JAMMU, June 22: Senior Congress leader and DDC Member Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, today made a fervent appeal to the administration to expedite the pending cases under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) in both rural and urban areas, particularly for families living below the poverty line.
He expressed deep concern over the plight of homeless and shelterless people as the monsoon season is fast approaching, posing serious risks to their lives and dignity.
While interacting with the residents of various Panchayats in Suchetgarh constituency, Tony said that a significant number of deserving beneficiaries are still awaiting the construction of their houses under PMAY. “It is extremely unfortunate that despite clear eligibility and sanctioned cases, funds are yet to be disbursed, leaving the poor to fend for themselves under the open sky,” he said.
He emphasized that the current delay in execution and disbursement is unacceptable, especially at a time when the region is bracing for heavy rains. “This is not just a matter of administration, but a humanitarian crisis in the making. Scores of families with small children, elderly members, and women are compelled to live in makeshift shelters or under tarpaulins, which could collapse any moment during a downpour,” Tony added.
The senior Congress leader appealed to the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, to immediately take cognizance of the issue and direct the concerned officers to release pending funds and clear all bottlenecks to ensure timely construction of PMAY houses.
