JAMMU, Feb 11: Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony and MLA RS Pura, Prof Gharu Ram Bhagat jointly inaugurated several development works in village Mana, Suchetgarh, aiming to improve the local infrastructure and address the longstanding concerns of the rural populace.
Jointly addressing the gathering, Prof Gharu Ram and Taranjit Singh Tony emphasized the urgent need for bifurcation of ration cards to ensure equitable distribution of essential supplies among the rural poor. They pointed out that several families are struggling due to the absence of proper ration card categorization, which has deprived them of their rightful entitlements.
“The bifurcation of ration cards is the need of the hour. It is a critical issue that affects thousands of rural families in Jammu & Kashmir, and the Government must act swiftly to resolve it,” they stated.
Taranjit Singh Tony, while highlighting the developmental challenges in the region, appealed to the Government to prioritize rural development and infrastructure enhancement. He stressed the need for immediate redevelopment of canals and repair of the tube well infrastructure, which has remained defunct for over a decade.
“Almost 70 percent of the tube wells in our region are non-functional, and the concerned department continues to cite a lack of funds for their repair. This has severely impacted the agrarian community, which depends on a well-functioning irrigation system,” he said.
Tony further urged the Government to allocate sufficient funds to modernize and streamline the operations of the Irrigation Department. He expressed concern over the neglect of rural areas and called upon the administration to put a special focus on the redevelopment of left-out and backward regions.
Cong general secretary also appealed to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to ensure that rural and border areas receive the attention they deserve. “Rural development must be at the core of policy planning. Neglecting villages will only widen the urban-rural divide,” he remarked.
Among those who were present included Naresh Bittu, District president Rural NC, Baldev Choudhary ex- Panch, Pappa Choudhary, Chuni Lal Choudhary, Capt. Parkash Choudhary and many other prominent people of the area.
