JAMMU, Apr 1: Suchetgarh witnessed a landmark infrastructure development as Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony, along with MLA RS Pura, Prof Gharu Ram, inaugurated the newly blacktopped road from Jhora Farm via Peer Baba Kupa Fly up to Jugnoo Post. This marks the first-ever construction of the road since Independence, completed at an estimated cost of Rs 2.72 crore.
Addressing the gathering, Tony emphasized the vital role of this road in enhancing connectivity for residents and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel. “Fulfilling this long-pending demand was my priority since assuming office as DDC. The final stretch, completed under NABARD, now extends up to the Zero Line, addressing both security and civilian needs,” he stated.
The road’s construction was initially proposed by former BSF DIG Surjeet Singh Shekho, who highlighted the difficulties faced by soldiers due to poor infrastructure. Tony noted that the route holds religious significance for locals visiting Peer Baba and will now ensure better access for devotees and security forces.
In a further boost to regional connectivity, Tony announced the approval of another major road project from Octroi Post Suchetgarh to Gharana Wetland, sanctioned at Rs 6.5 crore. “This development will not only strengthen border infrastructure but also promote eco-tourism,” he added.
Highlighting the concerns of local landowners affected by the Gharana Wetland project, Tony assured that they would be compensated with jobs in the wildlife sanctuary, recognizing their longstanding role in preserving migratory bird species.
Reaffirming his commitment to rural development, Tony assured continued efforts toward improving Zero Line infrastructure for the well-being of border communities and security personnel.
Prof Gharu Ram commended the initiative, stressing that infrastructure development in border areas is a necessity. “Better roads mean enhanced accessibility, safety, and economic opportunities for remote villages. Development must be inclusive for all,” he remarked.
Both Tony and Prof Gharu Ram pledged to transform Suchetgarh into a model constituency.
