RAJOURI, May 23: A high-level delegation from the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) visited Rajouri district today to meet families affected by the recent cross-border shelling from Pakistan.
The purpose of the visit was to offer condolences to the bereaved families, assess the damages caused by the heavy shelling, and review the arrangements made for the safety of civilians residing near the Line of Control (LoC).
The five-member delegation comprised prominent TMC leaders including Derek O’Brien, Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Party Leader in the Rajya Sabha; Mamata Thakur, MP Rajya Sabha; Sagarika Ghose, Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha; Manas Ranjan Bhunia, Minister in the Government of West Bengal; and Mohd Nadimul Haque, Chief Whip in the Rajya Sabha.
The team visited shelling-hit areas of Rajouri where they met with affected families and local residents, offering their sympathies and listening to their grievances and concerns.
As a part of their visit, the delegation also reached Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri, where they interacted with those injured in the recent shelling incidents and briefed by Principal GMC Rajouri Dr A S Bhatia.
They enquired about the treatment facilities and appreciated the efforts of the medical staff. The leaders expressed their deep concern over the continued threat faced by residents along the border and highlighted the urgent need for enhanced healthcare and rehabilitation measures in such vulnerable regions.
Speaking to the reporters, Derek O’Brien said that the visit was aimed at standing in solidarity with the people of Rajouri who continue to face insecurity due to repeated ceasefire violations. He stressed that the Government must take immediate steps to ensure adequate safety infrastructure, including the construction of bunkers, improvement of health facilities, and provision of emergency response systems to safeguard lives in border people.
The delegation reiterated the party’s commitment to raise the concerns of border residents at the national level and urged the Union Government to give focused attention to the challenges faced by people living in conflict-prone border areas of Rajouri and Poonch.
