JAMMU, Feb 25: To mark the 116th birthday of Sri Guru Gyagi Ji a grand religious function was organized by the J&K Batwal Welfare Association at Shahzadpur Kotli.
Thousands of devotees attended the function and participated in Bhajan-Kirtan. A religious discourse was also held on the occasion.
The Minister for Planning & Development and Labour & Employment Ajay Kumar Sadhotra was the chief guest on the occasion. He presented an award in memory of renowned Punjabi singer Lal Chand Yamla who belonged to Chanjotra clan of Batwal community to a local singer Krishan Lal Punjabi. He also honoured Raj Kapoor Sargotra on being presented prestigious medals by the Major General and the Lt. General of Indian Army for achieving excellence in cross country and marathon in divisional level and command level.
Besides the certificates of appreciation were given to the students who obtained distinctions in board examinations.
While paying rich tributes to Guru Gyagi Ji, Mr Sadhotra said that the spiritual scholars have left indelible mark in public service, which needs to be emulated by people for making this world a better place to live.
He said preaching of love, compassion and togetherness hold more relevance in present times than ever before. He urged the Batwal community to ornament their children with education, which he said is necessary for their overall empowerment.
After the appraisal of the demands put forth by the Batwal Welfare Association, the Minster announced Rs 10 lakh for the development of the area.
Association general secretary R L Kaith said Guru Gyagi devoted maximum time in meditation and self analysis who renounced every thing to do good to the humanity.
Speaking on the occasion president Batwal Association president and ex MLA Sat Paul Lakhotra said Government has done nothing for the betterment of the Batwal community so far.
