JAMMU, Dec 10: In a bizarre development, teachers have been directed to report about every stray dog they notice around the school premises.
Some Chief Education Officers (CEOs) have issued formal orders directing the ZEOs, Principals and Headmasters to nominate Nodal Officers for reporting sighting and incidents related to stray dogs in and around the school premises.
Further, directions have also been issued that signage bearing the message “Beware of Dogs” be displayed at prominent places in or outside school premises.
A formal orders in this regard, issued by CEO Poonch, gives reference of the minutes of meeting held under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Poonch on December 3, 2025.
The order directs all Government and private schools across the district to nominate a Nodal Officer for monitoring and managing issues related to stray dogs in and around school premises.
According to the order, the nominated Nodal Officer will be responsible for reporting all sightings and incidents involving stray dogs, coordinating with Municipal authorities, Animal Husbandry Department and local bodies for timely action, and ensuring necessary awareness and safety measures for students and staff.
The CEO has further instructed that the name, designation and contact number of the Nodal Officer must be prominently displayed outside the school boundary wall or main gate for public information.
Schools have been given a two-day deadline to submit the details of their nominated officers to the CEO’s office. The order cautions that any lapse in compliance will be viewed seriously.
Similar orders are learnt to have been issued by other CEOs.
Terming the order disgusting, teachers said that the directions have made them a laughing stock.
