Dr.S.S.Verma
To emphasize the importance of education, every year, teacher’s day is being celebrated all over the world on different dates and the world teachers day by UNSECO is celebrated on October 5 every year. India celebrates teacher’s day on 5th September in remembrance of First Vice-President and Second President of India’s Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, an educationist, philosopher and statesman par excellence himself. Teaching community feel honored to be remembered on this one day at least in a year though they may or may not get gifts from the society on this day due to downsizing their importance in the society for which teachers themselves are to blame to a great extent. Further, changing perception of education and its outcome (in terms of learning and job) in one’s life have left no choice with society in general and students in particular to least respect the teaching community. Besides, at present teachers are by chance in the profession of teaching and not by choice. Good students are always opting for other professions. Mediocre students with no other career choices are left with only last choice to join the profession of teaching that also with lots of hooks and crooks in the trade. Moreover, there are no true counter checks in the system on the performance, dedication and teaching related requirements of the teachers neither before joining the profession nor after joining the profession. Commercialization and privatization of education sector has further deteriorated not only the state of education in government run educational schools/colleges/university but lowered the prestige/respect of education fraternity in the society.
Recently, a judgment of Allahabad High Court that all the government employees should enroll their wards in government schools/institutes from academic session 2016 and has given direction to the Chief Secretary (UP) to report the developments to the court in six months has come as a great gift to teachers on Teacher’s day. First of the Honorable Judge deserve a great respect and thanks for this hall mark judgment. On the merit of this judgment, central government and state governments should also act, if not, the Supreme Court of India may take a sue-motto notice of the judgment and extend it to the whole nation and make central government and state government to follow the order strictly. It will bring a big change in the education scenario of the country and teachers will again be at par to their predecessors in terms of their respect in the society and it will be a great gift to teachers on Teacher’s day. When the wards of all politicians, officers, administrators, bureaucrats, governmental employees will join the government educational institutions, it will motivate other strata of society to enroll their children also which will reverse the present trend in which after implementation of government sponsored number of educational reforms (Right to Education) and providing different benefits like mid-day meal, free books, cycles, laptops, dresses, low tuition fee etc. People are not interested to send their wards to government run institutions and the strength of students in government run institutions is always on constant decrease.
The profession which has lost its image in the society will again come to the fore-front and teachers will again hold their heads high in the society. Good faculty will join the teaching profession and will be monitored for their performance during their service and will be answerable for the performance of students. Common people of society will be benefitted in general and will feel honored that their wards are studying in the same environment as the wards of influential people of the society. . Division of society on the basis of educational background along with other divisive forces/factors in the society like caste, creed, religion, and region is playing a negative role in the growth/prosperity and unity of the country. This will further save our society not from the growing division or demarcation based on the education but also prove to be stepping stone in the direction of unity and integrity of our nation.
Education can only make a difference in the society and its growth. It is nice to know that the President of India and Prime Minister of India are planning to take classes and interact with students on Teacher’s day. Planners of the country should stand above all self centered policies and accept this judgment and put whole heated efforts in its implementation all over the country to make India a developed nation in true sense. Let us hope that a day will come soon when all the wards of government officers, judges, politicians and employees will get enrollment in government run institutions and make India a nation at par with developed countries of the world. Hence, teaching community, no doubt, will be respected in the society and it will come as great Teacher’s day gift to teachers.
