Teacher injured by banned Chinese kite thread

JAMMU, Aug 4: In yet another alarming incident involving banned Chinese kite thread, a teacher from Army Public School (APS) Udhampur sustained injuries while riding her scooty on the flyover behind the Civil Secretariat in Jammu on Monday.
The victim, identified as Meenakshi (34), wife of Vishal Gupta and resident of Dharap in Jeevan Nagar, Jammu, was returning home when she suddenly came in contact with a sharp nylon thread—commonly referred to as ‘gattu’—which was hanging loosely across the road. The synthetic thread, known for its razor-sharp edge, inflicted serious cuts on her forehead and eyelids.
Startled and injured, Meenakshi managed to stop her scooty with the help of nearby commuters, who immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital. Doctors administered first aid for multiple facial injuries and discharged her later in the day. Fortunately, she escaped any major trauma, but the cuts required medical attention and bandaging.
Despite a ban imposed on the sale and use of Chinese kite string in Jammu and Kashmir due to its dangerous nature, incidents involving ‘gattu’ continue to occur frequently. Authorities have repeatedly warned about its life-threatening consequences, especially for two-wheeler riders and birds.
Local residents and commuters have expressed concern over the continued availability of such threads in the market and urged the administration to take stricter action against violators and conduct regular checks to prevent such hazardous materials from being used.
