Addressing a press conference here, Tarigami made a direct appeal to both the central and Jammu and Kashmir administrations to take responsibility for the welfare of the people in the border areas, where entire families have been impacted.
Despite a ceasefire, Tarigami highlighted the ongoing hardships faced by people in these areas, including power shortages, crop destruction, and the loss of fishing livelihoods. “The situation has become unbearable for the people. Many families have lost their primary earners and are left without any means to support themselves. The damage to farms, homes, and livelihoods is extensive, and there seems to be no end in sight to their suffering,” he said.
He also shared his personal experience of staying in touch with the people of Rajouri and Poonch during the worst of the conflict. “Even when bullets were falling, I remained in contact with them. There were only tears and pain. Only those who have lived through it can truly understand the anguish,” he said.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, the MLA urged the Government to step in and provide immediate assistance to families who have lost everything. “It is the Government’s responsibility to ensure that the children of these families do not go hungry. Their lives should be supported by the state, and their future must be secured,” he added.
The MLA also criticized the lack of adequate Government support for these affected families, pointing out that while large-scale relief announcements have been made in other areas, the border residents are still waiting for assistance. “This is a question of their livelihood and survival. We need immediate Government intervention to provide basic food and shelter to these people,” he said.
Tarigami further drew attention to the broader geopolitical context, criticizing global powers, particularly the United States, for using conflicts like the one in the region to further their strategic interests. “Peace does not come through the barrel of a gun. History has shown us that peace is achieved through peaceful means, not through violence. The suffering we are witnessing in the Middle East and Ukraine is proof of the devastating impact of conflicts fueled by larger powers,” he said.
