Addressing a press conference, Tarigami said that the people’s mandate must be respected by the Centre, which, he added, should not delay the restoration of Statehood.
“Statehood is being delayed, and it affects the people of J&K. The mandate given by the people-be it in Jammu or Kashmir-must be respected. If even this is unacceptable, then it is strange and unfortunate,” he said.
Urging all political parties to come together and launch a joint fight, he noted that the delay in the restoration of Statehood is affecting everyone in J&K, including those who voted against him during the Assembly elections.
“I appeal to all parties-despite our differences-why can’t we come together and urge the Government of India not to delay the restoration of Statehood? It is important for everyone, even those who fought elections against me and the parties that stood against each other,” he said.
Tarigami emphasized that the Centre must be reminded-in unison-that they had promised Statehood would be restored after delimitation and the Assembly elections.
On the overall happenings in the country, the CPI(M) leader said that a lot is going on, and at the same time, certain actions are being taken against the interests of the people.
“When there is a need for brotherhood and harmony in the country, issues are being raised that vitiate the atmosphere. Minorities are in distress,” he said.
He noted that India is known as a secular democracy, which means that the Government cannot function within a “constricted frame.”
He added that the response to the amendments suggested by the opposition to the Waqf Bill has impacted the functioning of Parliamentary committees, rendering them irrelevant. “This is a loss to the Parliamentary democracy of this country,” he said.
