SRINAGAR, Aug 28: Veteran CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami today expressed concern over the massive destruction caused by the recent floods in Jammu and Kashmir, terming them the worst in nearly nine decades.
He said the floods have damaged roads, bridges, agriculture, and infrastructure, leaving thousands of residents in distress.
Tarigami said farmers, orchardists, and small vendors have suffered heavy losses, particularly in Jammu, south Kashmir, and Warwan areas.
He added that tribal communities, including Gujjar-Bakerwals, lost large numbers of livestock which formed their livelihood.
He urged the Government to provide immediate assistance to the affected families.
Calling the calamity a wake-up call, Tarigami said natural disasters may be unpredictable but preparedness is always possible.
He criticised the administration for ignoring repeated warnings and depending on “photo-ops” after tragedies strike.
He blamed poor planning, deforestation, and disruption of natural drainage for worsening the crisis.
The MLA urged both the State and Central Governments to take the disaster seriously, provide timely relief, and frame long-term strategies for disaster management and ecological conservation.
He also appealed to the Centre to declare the floods in Jammu and Kashmir a National disaster.
