Srinagar, Apr 29: CPI(M) leader and MLA from Kulgam, M Y Tarigami, today urged both the Centre and the opposition to take measures to restore the confidence of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the rest of the country.
Speaking to reporters, Tarigami said the incident in Pahalgam was a major setback, particularly for tourism, but expressed hope that tourists would once again return to Kashmir.
“The entire sector is going through a difficult phase. Whether tourist destinations are closed or not, it doesn’t change the reality — it’s already a setback,” he said.
He emphasized that at the national level, both the Government of India and the opposition must take concrete steps to rebuild the confidence of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country.
Tarigami added that the entire community across Jammu and Kashmir has condemned the Pahalgam attack, including during the special session of the Assembly, where, he said, leaders from all parties expressed solidarity with the affected.
He also said that those who carried out the Pahalgam attack tried to frame it in religious terms. “As if they love Muslims’ blood. If that were true, the Mirwaiz wouldn’t have been killed — nor would the Mirwaiz of South Kashmir have been targeted,” he said.
He pointed out that thousands have suffered in J&K over the years, with the majority being Muslims.
“The killers don’t care whose blood they are spilling. We must understand that hate benefits no one. Anyone who spreads hate ultimately harms society and the nation,” the CPI(M) leader said.
He concluded by noting the “trust deficit” in the region, which needs to be addressed. “There is a gap, a distance, and that must be bridged,” he said.
