Taiwan stocks end higher; Catcher down on China accident

TAIPEI, July 27:
Taiwan stocks ended 2.21 percent higher on Friday, joining a regional rise on optimism over the eurozone, with heavyweights TSMC, Hon Hai and HTC all jumping close to 4 percent.
Catcher Technology, a supplier to Apple, lost 0.91 percent. The company confirmed a report that a gas leak at one of its plants in Suzhou, eastern China, on Thursday had caused injuries, but said the accident was unrelated to production.
It had earlier fallen as much as 7 percent.
The main TAIEX index rose 153.8 points to 7,124.49, after opening 1.29 percent higher.
Chip makers were among the top gainers, up 3.22 percent. Electronics shares advanced 2.57 percent, while banking plays rose 1.82 percent.
The Taiwan dollar was up by T$0.068 to trade at T$30.082.
Foreign investors were net sellers on Thursday, bringing their total selling to T$67.65 billion this month.
