Swift police action leads to arrest of snatchers in Janipur

JAMMU, Feb 10: In a swift and coordinated effort, Janipur police arrested two accused involved in a mobile phone snatching case within six hours of the incident.
The case was registered after an applicant, Akashay Kumar Aryan, son of Suresh Kumar, a resident of Lower Roop Nagar, reported that while heading towards a library in Lower Roop Nagar, an unknown person on a scooty snatched his iPhone 12 worth Rs 70,000. Based on his complaint, an FIR Number 17/2025 under Section 307 BNS was lodged at Janipur Police Station, and an investigation was launched.
SHO Janipur, Inspector Vikram Sharma, utilized smart city surveillance cameras to track the accused. The footage helped identify the scooty bearing registration number JK02CF 0979, leading to the arrest of two suspects-Sumeet Sharma, son of Omkar Sharma from Bhaderwah (currently residing in Paloura, Jammu), and Aman, son of Satveer from Rajeev Nagar, Narwal. The police also seized the scooty used in the crime.
Further investigation is underway to dismantle the entire gang involved in similar snatching incidents across Jammu city. Notably, accused Sumeet Sharma is a habitual offender with four previous FIRs registered against him for theft and snatching. In light of his criminal record, the police have also opened his history sheet as per standard procedures.
This case highlights the effectiveness of the smart city surveillance system, which played a crucial role in decoding the number plate and ensuring the timely arrest of the culprits. With the accused in custody and key evidence secured, the investigation is progressing towards a strong prosecution.
