Sure Chak killing: one of suspended cops arrested for ‘culpable homicide’

SIT also establishes deceased youth was drug peddler

JAMMU, Sept 23: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police has formally arrested one of the suspended District Special Branch (DSB) cops in connection with the killing of a Gujjar youth in police firing in Sure Chak area on July 24 this year, while further probe continues.
The SIT, led by DySP Domana, has also found that the deceased, Mohammad Parvez alias Bachu, son of late Rehmat Ali of Javed Nagar, Nikki Tawi, Jammu, was involved in narcotics smuggling.
“Constable Pawan Singh, one of the two suspended DSB cops, was arrested today on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 105 of the BNS,” police sources said.
They added, “It has also been established that the deceased, Mohammad Parvez, was a drug peddler,” while stressing that further investigation is still in progress.
Both Pawan Singh and Head Constable Baljinder Singh were suspended on July 25 during the probe into FIR number 153/2025 registered under sections 109(1), 3(5) BNS and 3/27 Arms Act at Satwari Police Station after the victim’s family alleged he was innocent and killed in cold-blooded murder.
The next day, a departmental inquiry led by DySP Headquarters Jammu, and a SIT under DySP Domana Mudassar Hussain with three SHOs and one PO as members, were set up to examine the allegations.
The District Magistrate Jammu also ordered a magisterial inquiry by SDM Jammu South to ensure “an impartial probe into the circumstances of the firing incident”.
“As investigations progress, the SIT has arrested one suspended cop for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and established that the youth killed in the firing was a narcotics smuggler,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity.
