JAMMU, Apr 8: Minister of State for Transport, Science and Technology, Sunil Kumar Sharma reviewed functioning of the Transport Department in a meeting at Civil Secretariat here today.
The minister stressed the need for adopting and incorporating innovative ideas for improving and streamlining functioning of the Transport Department. He said besides bringing efficiency and transparency in the working of the department, there is a need for providing better and efficient transport facilities to the public.
The Minister emphasized that Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), State Motor Garages (SMG) and J&K State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) should work in unison to improve and strengthen public transport system in the state.
The officers of MVD, SRTC and State Motor Garages gave brief presentation regarding the general functioning and year wise achievements of their respective departments.
While reviewing the functioning of MVD, the Minister was informed about the general working, prospective planning and major schemes of the department.
The Minister while reviewing the functioning of State Motor Garages was informed that the department is entrusted with the responsibility of providing transport facilities to the Council of Ministers, State Government functionaries, State guests etc. Besides it also provides transport facilities to various agencies connected with the maintenance of law and order, security and during exigencies like floods and earthquakes.
Commissioner Secretary Transport, R K Bhagat, Transport Commissioner, Parvaiz Iqbal Khateeb, MD SRTC, G A Sofi, Director Garages and other officers of the Transport Department were present at the meeting.
